Nordhavn Tiny Church
The winds of change are blowing at the tip of the Copenhagen harbor area Nordhavn. Large building complexes are emerging, creating a striking contrast to the self-built houses and cozy alleys of the small fishing harbor Fiskerihavnen. The project takes its starting point in the unknown future of the fishing harbor, where diverse forces argue for demolition versus preservation.
The harbor chapel is inspired by the concept of a lighthouse as a guiding star that offers security and hope on the voyage into an uncertain future. It is a lighthouse for people - a luminous, inviting, and adaptable gathering place for local residents, as well as an arrival point for pilgrims journeying from nearby churches. Its modular design allows for effortless disassembly and relocation, adapting to the future changes in the area.
The church hall faces east, where the lighthouse tower forms the chancel. Elevated windows invite the morning sun to illuminate the interior without compromising privacy, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and reflection.
The chapel is constructed with recycled materials, mirroring the distinctive self-built expression of Fiskerihavnen. Façade planks, crafted from charred recycled wood, provide both a low-maintenance, enduring surface and accentuate the natural texture of the timber - a symbol of hope for new beginnings after difficult trials. Inside the chapel, the wood's light, untreated surface remains preserved. The striking contrast between the dark exterior and the bright interior underscores the chapel's role as a conduit of light, faith, and hope.
