Living Learning Spaces - Outdoor Learning Pavilions

In a time of climate crisis, it is essential to rethink the architectural framework of public schools to support the green transition. Many schools are seeking better outdoor facilities to promote creative outdoor learning as part of daily education. We explore how architecture can meet this need through circular learning pavilions that integrate nature experiences into teaching.

In collaboration with schools in Copenhagen, we conduct user workshops with teachers and students from grades 4 to 8, working together on drawing, model building, and on-site observations in schoolyards. The goal is to foster a sense of ownership and engagement, gain insight into students’ perspectives, and develop innovative solutions that harmonize with outdoor school environments.

The project focuses on three key themes:

  1. Future Learning Spaces – challenging the traditional school typology.

  2. Pedagogical Tectonics – exploring how construction methods and materials can practically and tangibly communicate circular architecture to students.

  3. Natural Cycles – examining how buildings can enhance students’ understanding of nature’s circular processes.
