Les Hauts De Dorigny School & Kindergarten

The vision for Hauts de Dorigny School is to create an inclusive and inspiring learning environment in harmony with nature and the surrounding landscape. The design aligns with the neighborhood’s large scale and expression while maintaining a warm and inviting atmosphere, where young children can feel at home. The building revolves around an inner courtyard, surrounded by open and public functions, turning it into a lively node for the community. On top of the ground floors lies an open square volume, placed like the crown of a tree.

The vision for the multifunctional school layout is to create an active and social center, contrasted by calm spaces along the outside perimeter. Active spaces, such as the sports hall and canteen, are strategically placed around the inner courtyard, fostering visual connectivity. The quieter zone along the building perimeter with classrooms and kindergarten, acknowledges the importance of focus and calmness in a child’s education.

This vision seeks to strengthen the areas existing landscape by preserving its natural topography and green spaces, and promoting walking and cycling to the school. Green schoolyards and playgrounds provide children with opportunities for imaginative play with natural elements, fostering motor skills, concentration, and exploration of the natural world. Furthermore, research indicates that exposure to green spaces significantly benefits learning, well- being, stress reduction, and focus.

The materials on the inside of the building are predominantly wood, creating a tactile, eco-friendly interior that minimizes CO2 emissions, adapted to suit the scale and sensitivity of its young users. The concept of a timber school situated in a park has the potential to inspire children of all ages, fostering a deeper sense of connection, understanding, and respect for nature.
